omega はギリシャ語 ō mega「大きい o」から来た語で、o + mega「大きい」に分けられる。同じ o 音の文字 omicron が「小さい o」だったため、それと区別する名として生まれた。そこから英語では「最後・究極」の象徴にもなる。関連語は megaphone, megabyte。
