Etymology

関連語:cactus(ギリシャ語のトゲ植物)、ficus-indica。

The botanical name Opuntia comes through Latin and refers to Opus, an ancient Greek city in Locris. The name was associated with a plant described in antiquity as growing near that place, although the ancient plant was not necessarily the American cactus now classified under the name. Modern taxonomy later applied Opuntia to the prickly-pear genus. The related term cactus ultimately comes from Greek kaktos, a name for a spiny plant.
