骨化
解説 Definition
柔らかい有機物質が硬い骨の物質に変わるプロセス。硬化するプロセス。
Ossification is the process in which soft tissue becomes bone or turns bone-like. It is often used in medicine and biology when talking about growth or body development. It can also be used more generally for something becoming fixed and no longer flexible, especially in abstract contexts.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず動詞 ossify をセットで覚えると定着しやすい語です。語尾 -tion は「プロセス・状態」を表す名詞化なので、ossification は「ossifyすること」。医療では tissue ossification のように実際の骨化、比喩では institutional ossification のように「制度や組織が硬直化すること」にも使えます。hardening より専門的で、calcification はカルシウム沈着寄り、ossification は“骨のように固まる”感じだと区別すると覚えやすいです。
Learn it together with the verb `ossify`. The ending `-tion` often shows a process or result, so `ossification` is the process of becoming bone or becoming hard. It is useful to connect it with both medical use and the idea of a system becoming stiff and unchanging.

ossification の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 os / oss-「骨」に、-ify「…にする」と -ation「作用」が重なった語です。ossify や osseous も同根で、文字どおり「骨にしていく過程」なので、体組織が骨になる意味だと素直に理解できます。
Ossification comes from Latin os, oss- meaning "bone," plus the English-forming parts -ify "make into" and -ation "process." It literally means "the process of making into bone." The word later also developed a figurative sense of becoming rigid or fixed. Related English words include ossify and osseous.
