outcry は out（外へ）＋ cry（叫ぶ）から成る語で、cry は古フランス語 crier、さらにラテン語にさかのぼります。cry や decry と同根で、声が外へ噴き出すイメージから、「大声の叫び」が「抗議・非難の声」という意味に発展しました。
