Outlining is the present-participle or gerund form of outline. It means stating the main points, structure, or essential features of a plan, argument, or subject without giving every supporting detail.

out（外に）+ line（線）+ -ing の構成。line はラテン語 linea（亜麻の糸、線）に由来。外側の線を描くことから「輪郭を示す→概要を述べる」へ意味が発展。関連語は outline（概要）、linear（直線的な）。
Outlining consists of outline plus the participial ending -ing; the final e of outline is dropped before the suffix. Outline combines out and line and originally referred to the line marking an object’s outer boundary. Line ultimately comes through French from Latin linea, “linen thread” and then “line.” The physical sense of drawing a contour developed naturally into the figurative sense of presenting a subject’s main structure or points.
