Overabundance means a much larger amount of something than is needed or useful. It is often used when there is so much of something that it creates waste, confusion, or imbalance.

まず abundance を「豊富さ」として押さえ、abundant なら「豊富な」。そこに over- が付くと「豊富を超えて、多すぎる」になり、overabundance は「過剰なあり余り」と読めます。abundance だけなら基本は肯定的ですが、overabundance になると「多すぎて問題」という響きが出るのが重要です。an overabundance of food / choices / information のように、供給や選択肢が多すぎて逆に困る場面と結びつけると定着しやすいです。

overabundance は over-「過度に」と abundance の結合で、abundance は古フランス語を経てラテン語 abundantia に由来します。さらに abundare は ab-「離れて」+ unda「波」で、もとは「波のようにあふれ出る」ことなので、「あり余るほどの豊富さ」からそのまま「過剰」の意味になった語です。関連語は abound, abundant。
