Overlapping is the present-participial and adjectival form of overlap. Overlap combines over, from Old English ofer, with lap, a word associated with a fold, flap, or part lying over another part. The compound therefore developed the literal sense of extending across and covering part of something else. Its meaning later broadened naturally from physical objects to shared periods, areas, duties, interests, and ideas.
