tease は古英語 tǣsan「引き裂く・ほぐす」に由来し、羊毛を櫛でかいて繊維をばらす動作を指しました。そこから「相手の気持ちをかき乱す」が生まれ、今の「からかう」へ。関連語は teaser。
Tease comes from Old English taesan, which meant "pull apart" or "comb out." It was first used for separating fibers such as wool with a comb. From this sense of disturbing and pulling apart, it later came to mean upsetting or provoking someone's feelings, and then jokingly bothering someone.
