overpaymentはover「過度に」+ pay「払う」+ -mentで、payは古フランス語経由でラテン語pacare「清算して落ち着かせる」に由来します。払うとは本来「きれいに済ませる」ことなので、overpaymentは必要以上に済ませる感じです。paymentやpacifyが同根です。
