南京錠
解説 Definition
鍵によって施錠される金属製の小型ロック装置。門や物置などを簡易的に施錠するために使用される。日本語の「南京錠」と同じ機能を持つ。
A padlock is a portable lock with a metal bar that opens and closes with a key, number code, or similar method. People commonly use it to secure doors, gates, lockers, chains, or boxes. It is separate from the object it locks, so it can be moved and used again in different places.

padlock の語源・成り立ち Etymology
padlockは中英語pad-lokに見られる語で、lockは古英語loc「閉じる装置」に由来します。pad-は語源不詳ですが、荷かご用の錠を指した可能性があるとされます。つまり『持ち運び式の付け外しできる錠』という感覚で、lockやlockerと同根です。
Padlock appears in Middle English as pad-lok. Lock comes from Old English loc, meaning a fastening device, but the pad- part is uncertain and may have referred to a portable or basket lock. The word developed with the sense of a lock that can be attached and removed, unlike one built into a door.
