解説 Definition

恐怖や不安で落ち着きを失い、パニックになりかけた、またはひどく慌てた様子を表す形容詞です。人や群衆のほか、声・表情・反応などにも使います。

Feeling or showing sudden, poorly controlled fear or anxiety. It commonly describes a person, voice, expression, reaction, or crowd that is becoming unable to remain calm.

使い方 Usage

  • feel panicky は「パニックになりそうに感じる」、sound panicky は「声が慌てているように聞こえる」です。 Feel panicky describes experiencing panic or near-panic; sound panicky describes fear or agitation audible in someone's voice.
  • 名詞の前では a panicky voice「慌てた声」、a panicky reaction「パニック的な反応」などと使います。 Before a noun, use combinations such as a panicky voice or a panicky reaction.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

panic + -y と結び付け、綴りは c が ck になる panicky と覚えます。パスポートが見つからず、声や表情から落ち着きが消える場面を想像し、calm と対にしましょう。

Connect panicky with panic plus -y, noting the spelling change from c to ck. Imagine someone unable to find a passport, with fear showing in their voice and expression. Contrast this image with calm.

例文

She sounded panicky when she could not find her passport.

パスポートが見つからないとき、彼女の声はひどく慌てていました。

The panicky crowd moved toward the exit too quickly.

パニック状態の群衆は、出口に向かってあまりにも急いで移動しました。

He tried to stay calm, but his panicky expression worried everyone.

彼は落ち着こうとしましたが、慌てた表情が皆を心配させました。

panicky の語源・成り立ち Etymology

panicky は panic に形容詞語尾 -y が付いた語です。panic 自体はフランス語 panique を経てギリシャ語 panikon「牧神 Pan による恐怖」にさかのぼり、理由もなく急に怖くなる感じがそのまま語源に入っています。関連語は panic、panic-stricken。

Panicky was formed in English from panic and the adjective suffix -y, with c changed to ck to retain the /k/ sound. Panic entered English through French panique and ultimately comes from Greek panikon, referring to sudden fear associated with Pan, the god of the wild. The historical idea of abrupt, seemingly unreasoning terror remains present in the modern adjective.
