Etymology
Pappy is an affectionate formation based on papa, with the familiar ending -y. Papa belongs to a widespread group of nursery words for “father” built from simple consonant-and-vowel sequences that young children can produce early. Similar forms occur in many languages, though they need not all share one direct historical source. In American English, pappy developed strong regional and rustic associations while retaining its intimate family meaning.
