grownup は grow「育つ」（古英語 growan）と up「すっかり・完全に」からできた語です。関連語は grow, overgrown で、直訳の「育ちきった人」という感覚から大人を表すようになりました。
Grownup is made from grown, from the verb grow, and up. Grow goes back to Old English growan, meaning to grow or develop. The literal sense was "fully grown," and from that it came to mean a person who has reached adulthood. Related words include grow and overgrown.
