pertain の語源・成り立ち Etymology
pertain は古フランス語 partenir を経て、ラテン語 pertinere「しっかり届く・関係する」に由来します。per-「通して・完全に」+ tenere「つかむ」なので、「ある事柄にぴたりとつながっている」感覚から「関係する」の意味になりました。retain や tenant も同じ tenere の仲間です。
