桟橋
解説 Definition
桟橋は船が接岸し貨物や旅客を乗せ降ろしするために、陸地から水面に向かって伸びた構造物です。木造やコンクリート製などの形態があり、港や観光地の沿岸に設置されて人や荷物の移動を支えます。
A pier is a structure built out into the water from the shore. People use it for walking, fishing, boats, or getting on and off ships, depending on the place.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
pier は「港全体」ではなく、海や川へ細長く突き出した“乗り降りの足場”として覚えると定着しやすいです。船をつける場面でよく出て、walk along the pier, fishing pier, at the end of the pier の形で見かけます。dock は停泊場所全般、harbor は港全体なので範囲が違います。つづりは peer（同僚・じっと見る）と紛らわしいので、pier は i.e. 細い通路が水へ伸びる形を頭に置くと区別しやすいです。
Picture a long narrow walkway reaching out into the water. That image fits common phrases like `walk along the pier` or `at the end of the pier`. Be careful not to confuse it with `peer`, which is a different word with a similar spelling.

pier は古フランス語 pierre「石」、さらにラテン語 petra「岩」にさかのぼるとされ、水に突き出た構造物がもとは石造だった感覚を残します。petrify や petroleum も同じ petr- 系で、桟橋が「岩のように固く支えるもの」から来たと見ると意味がつかめます。
Pier is thought to come through Old French from a word related to stone or rock, ultimately linked to Latin petra, meaning "rock." This reflects the fact that such structures were originally solid stone supports or jetties. The meaning then widened to the structure itself, especially one built out into the water; petrify and petroleum are from the same root family.
