pier は古フランス語 pierre「石」、さらにラテン語 petra「岩」にさかのぼるとされ、水に突き出た構造物がもとは石造だった感覚を残します。petrify や petroleum も同じ petr- 系で、桟橋が「岩のように固く支えるもの」から来たと見ると意味がつかめます。
