poiseは古フランス語poiser「重さを量る」を経て、ラテン語pensare「重さを量る」にさかのぼります。重みをつり合わせて静止させる感覚から、「身構える・落ち着いて保つ」という意味が出ました。ponderやcompensateが同じ根です。
Poise comes through Old French from Latin pensare, meaning to weigh carefully. It first referred to balancing weight on a scale.
