ラテン語 possidēre（占有する）の過去分詞 possessus に由来。pot-（力）+ sedēre（座る）で「力をもって居座る」が原義。possess（所有する）や possession（所有物）と同根。霊が人に「居座る」イメージから憑依の意味が生まれた。
