possessed は possess(所有する、取りつく)の過去形・過去分詞です。ここでは「憑依した」「取りつかれた」という意味で、人や物に霊などが入り込んだ状態を表します。

Possessed is the past-tense and past-participle form of possess. In this sense, it describes a person, animal, place, or object believed to be controlled or inhabited by a spirit or supernatural force.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

原形 possess に -ed を付けた過去形・過去分詞で、語末の /s/ の後の -ed は /t/ と発音し、全体は /pəˈzest/ です。所有の意味もありますが、be possessed by an evil spirit では「悪霊に占有される」イメージから「取りつかれている」。受け身の型で覚えましょう。

Start with possess, whose basic meaning is to own or control something. Possessed adds -ed and is both the simple past and past participle. In the supernatural sense, imagine a spirit taking control of a person, doll, or house as though occupying it. The common pattern is be possessed by an evil spirit. Because the final sound of possess is /s/, the -ed ending is pronounced /t/, and possessed ends like “zest.” This links the grammatical form, pronunciation, and image of supernatural control.

possessed の語源・成り立ち Etymology

ラテン語 possidēre(占有する)の過去分詞 possessus に由来。pot-(力)+ sedēre(座る)で「力をもって居座る」が原義。possess(所有する)や possession(所有物)と同根。霊が人に「居座る」イメージから憑依の意味が生まれた。

Possessed is the past and participial form of possess. Possess came through French from Latin possidere, “to occupy or own,” whose past participle was possessus. The Latin formation is traditionally associated with potis, conveying power or mastery, and sedere, “to sit.” The idea of occupying or controlling something later extended from ordinary ownership to a spirit controlling or inhabiting a person or object.
