prefaced の語源・成り立ち Etymology

prefaced は preface「序文を付ける」の過去分詞形で、語源はラテン語 praefatio、さらに prae-「前に」+ fari「語る」です。fable や confess も fari とつながり、本題の前でまず語るものだから「序文付き」という意味だと腑に落ちます。

Prefaced is the past-tense and past-participle form of preface. Preface comes through Old French and Middle English from Latin praefatio, “an introductory statement.” The Latin noun is related to praefari, formed from prae-, “before,” and fari, “to speak.” Its structure therefore reflects saying something before the main discourse. English words such as fable ultimately share the ancient Indo-European root associated with speaking, though their meanings developed along different paths.
