古フランス語 prelat を経て、中世ラテン語 praelatus に由来します。prae-「前に」+ latus「運ばれた」で「前に置かれた人」が原義なので、教会で他者より上位に立つ高位聖職者という意味になりました。関連語は prefer, prelacy。
