Preoccupations are thoughts, worries, or interests that take up a lot of a person's attention. The word is often used for subjects someone keeps thinking about or cannot easily stop focusing on. It is usually used in the plural form.

pre-「前もって」+ occupy の語源であるラテン語 occupare「つかむ・占める」に由来し、フランス語経由で英語化した語です。もとは「先に心を占めること」で、そこから強い関心やこだわりの意味になりました。関連語は occupy, occupation です。
Preoccupations comes from pre-, meaning before, and a word based on Latin occupare, meaning to seize or take possession of. It reached English through French and originally suggested something that took hold of the mind in advance. From that, it developed into the sense of strong concerns, fixed interests, or mental obsessions.
