覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
preseason は pre-「前の」+ season「公式シーズン」で、文字どおり「シーズン前の期間」です。名詞では during the preseason、形容詞的には preseason game、preseason training、preseason rankings と使います。postseason「シーズン後の決勝期間」と対にし、選手選考や調整を行う準備段階として覚えましょう。
Divide preseason into pre-, meaning “before,” and season, the regular period of official competition. The structure therefore tells you both the timing and the purpose: it is the preparation period before the season begins. Picture players attending preseason training and teams playing preseason games to test tactics, fitness, and new members. Use the noun in expressions such as during the preseason or start preseason, and use it before another noun in preseason schedule or preseason match. Contrast it with postseason, the period after the regular season that often includes playoffs or championship games.

preseason の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 prae-(前に)+ 英語 season(季節・シーズン)の組み合わせ。season はラテン語 satio(種まきの時期)→ 古フランス語 seison に由来。スポーツの公式戦(シーズン)の「前の」期間を指す。関連語:prewar(戦前の)、seasonal(季節の)。pre- は「事前」を示す生産的な接頭辞。
Preseason is a transparent English formation combining the productive prefix pre-, “before,” with season. Pre- comes from Latin prae, while season entered English through Old French seison from Latin satio, originally associated with sowing or a suitable time. As organized sports developed regular competitive seasons, preseason came to denote the preceding period of preparation and exhibition play. It can function as a noun or as an attributive modifier before another noun.
