purl は中世フランス語 perle「真珠」にさかのぼり、編み目の粒立ちが真珠の連なりのように見えることから来たとされます。pearl と同系と考えると、裏編みの凹凸が「小さな珠の列」に見立てられた語感が腑に落ちます。
