覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
動詞 ready「準備する」の過去形・過去分詞で、子音字 y の前に子音があるため y を i に変えて -ed を付け、readied となる。発音は /ˈredid/。形容詞的には readied equipment や a readied room のように「すでに使用・行動できる状態へ整えられた」を表し、単なる ready より準備作業の完了を意識させる。
Start with the verb ready, “to prepare.” Because ready ends in a consonant plus y, change y to i before adding -ed: ready becomes readied, pronounced /ˈredid/. The spelling therefore records the regular consonant-plus-y rule, not a change in the basic meaning. As an adjective, readied emphasizes that someone performed the preparation: readied equipment has been checked and placed where it can be used, and a readied room has been arranged for its occupants. Compare ready, which simply describes the resulting state and does not necessarily draw attention to the preparation process.

readied の語源・成り立ち Etymology
古英語 rǣde(準備された)から派生。語根はゲルマン祖語 *raidijaną(整える)に遡り、ready の過去分詞形。関連語:ready(準備できた)、already(すでに)。「整える」が原義で、行動に移れる状態を示す。
Readied is the past tense and past participle of the verb ready, with the participle used adjectivally here. Ready comes from Old English rǣde, meaning “prepared” or “prompt,” and belongs to a Germanic word family. The verb developed from the adjective with the sense “to make ready.” In forming readied, English follows its regular spelling rule: a final y after a consonant changes to i before the suffix -ed is added.
