A rearguard is the group at the back of an army that protects the main force from attack from behind. It can also be used more generally for people who take a defensive position or resist change.

`guard` が「守る」だと分かれば、`rearguard` は「後ろ側を守る役」と捉えると覚えやすいです。前に立って先導する `vanguard`（前衛）と対で覚えると定着します。戦場では撤退時に最後尾で味方を守る部隊、比喩では「古い立場を守る保守派」という使い方もあります。`rear` は車の rear seat や rear door の「後部」と同じ感覚。前に出る語ではなく、後方で支える語だと押さえるのがコツです。
