vanguardはフランス語avant-gardeからで、avant「前に」+ garde「守る隊」がそのまま入っています。軍の先頭で進路を開く部隊が原義なので、比喩的に新しい表現の先頭を行く「前衛」になったのです。guardやwardenも同じgarde/ward系の仲間です。
