本や書籍の右側のページを指す印刷用語。本を開いたときに見える奇数ページで、1枚の紙の表側にあたる。
Recto is the front or right-hand page of a sheet in a book or manuscript. It is mainly used in printing, publishing, and book studies. In everyday English, most people do not use this word.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
本を開いて読む場面で覚えると残りやすい語です。recto は「右ページ」、対になるのは verso「左ページ」。日常語ではないので、単体で暗記するより recto/verso をセットで固定すると混乱しません。写本・印刷・辞書の説明では「奇数ページ＝recto」と出やすく、ページ番号を見れば右側だと判断できます。right という形が見えないぶん、「専門用語なのでペアで覚える」と決めるのがいちばん実用的です。

recto はラテン語 rectus「まっすぐな、正しい」から来た語で、印刷では folio recto「紙葉の右側」が省略された形です。correct や rectify と同根なので、右ページが「正しい表側」と感じられていた昔の本作りの感覚が透けて見えます。
Recto comes from Latin rectus, meaning "straight" or "right." In printing, it is a shortened form of folio recto, the term for the front or right-hand side of a leaf. The word keeps the older idea of the "correct" or "proper" side, and it is related to rectify and correct.
