車や航空機、機械などに燃料を追加して補給することです。燃料を使い切った後だけでなく、残量が減ったときに足す場合にも使えます。
To refuel means to put more fuel into a vehicle, machine, or aircraft so it can continue operating. It is commonly used for cars, planes, ships, and military equipment. The word can also be used more generally for supplying energy or resources again.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
re- は「もう一度」、fuel は「燃料」。合わせて refuel は「燃料をもう一度入れる」とそのまま取れる。rebuild, retry などと同じく、re- が付くと「再び」の感覚になると整理すると覚えやすい。似た語の refill は中身全般を補充する語だが、refuel はガソリン・灯油・航空燃料など“燃料”に寄る。battery なら recharge、車やヘリなら refuel。stop to refuel, refuel the aircraft のような場面ごと覚えると定着しやすい。

refuel はラテン語由来の接頭辞 re-「再び」と、古フランス語を経てラテン語 focus「炉・火床」にさかのぼる fuel から成る。foyer や focus も同根で、もとは「火のある場所」の感覚だから、燃料を入れ直す意味が腑に落ちる。
Refuel is built from re-, meaning "again," and fuel. Fuel came through Old French and goes back to Latin focus, meaning "hearth" or "fireplace," the place of fire in a home.
