reigningとは、現在君主として君臨・統治している状態、または現在タイトルや地位を保持している状態を表す形容詞です。現在の王や女王、あるいは現在の優勝者や王者を描写する際に使われます。「現役の」「現在の」という意味合いを持ちます。

Reigning is the present-participial and adjectival form of reign. Reign entered English through Old French reigne or reigner, from Latin regnum, “kingdom” or “royal power,” and regnare, “to rule.” These forms belong to the reg- family associated with directing or governing. The adjective first naturally described an actively ruling sovereign and was later extended to current titleholders and to ideas or influences that dominate their field.
