解説 Definition

relapses は relapse(再発する、逆戻りする)の三人称単数現在形です。病気や悪い状態がいったん良くなった後に再び悪化する場合に使われます。

Relapses is the third-person singular present form of relapse. It describes a disease, condition, or person returning to a worse or unhealthy state after a period of improvement or apparent recovery.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

原形 relapse「いったん改善した後に再発する」に三人称単数現在の -s が付いた形です。語末が /s/ なので語尾は /ɪz/ と発音します。the infection relapses や the condition relapses の形で、病気や悪い状態が回復途中から「再び滑り戻る」場面を思い浮かべます。

Start with the base verb relapse, meaning to become ill or troubled again after improving. Relapses adds the third-person singular present ending -s; because the base ends in the /s/ sound, the ending is pronounced /ɪz/. The word often appears with subjects such as the infection, the condition, or the patient. Imagine recovery as climbing upward and a relapse as slipping back down: if the condition relapses, the earlier improvement does not last.

relapses の語源・成り立ち Etymology

ラテン語 relabi(re-=再び+labi=滑る・落ちる)から。「再び元の状態に滑り落ちる」が原義。関連語:lapse(経過・失効)、collapse(崩壊、col-=共に+labi)。病気が一度治りかけてまた悪化する様子を「滑り戻る」と表現した。

Relapse ultimately comes from Latin relabi, formed from re-, “back or again,” and labi, “to slip or fall.” The central image is therefore that of slipping back into a former condition. English applied this image especially to renewed illness or renewed harmful behavior after improvement. Lapse and collapse are historically related through the same Latin root associated with slipping or falling.
