覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
バトンや信号を次へ渡すイメージで覚えましょう。relay は母音字+y で終わるので、y を変えずに -s を付けて relays。語末は /z/ と発音します。
Picture a baton or signal being passed to the next person or device. Relay ends in a vowel letter plus y, so keep the y and add -s: relays. The ending is pronounced /z/.

relays の語源・成り立ち Etymology
古フランス語 relais に由来し、re-(再び)+ laier(置く・残す)の構成。狩猟で疲れた猟犬の代わりに道中に配置した交替犬が原義。そこから「交替・中継」の意味に発展した。関連語に delay(遅らせる)がある。バトンを渡すリレー競走のイメージそのものが語源に直結する。
Relay comes through French relais, historically connected with replacing tired horses or hunting dogs stationed along a route. This idea of a fresh replacement taking over developed into the broader sense of passing something onward in stages. It later became the name for team races and for electrical devices that transfer or control signals. Relays is formed by adding the regular plural ending -s.
