re-「再び」＋map「地図化する」＋-ing。mapは中世ラテン語mappa「布・地図」にさかのぼり、関連語にmapping、roadmapがある。つまりremappingは、いったん作った対応関係をもう一度描き直すこと。
Remapping is built from re- "again," map, and the action ending -ing. Map comes through Medieval Latin mappa, first meaning "cloth" or "napkin," and later also "map." So remapping literally means drawing the map again, and from there it came to mean rebuilding or changing an existing set of connections.
