覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
remorse「深い後悔」+ -ful「満ちた」+ -ly「〜に」という三段階の派生で覚えると定着しやすい。単に regretfully「残念に思って」よりも、自分の行為が悪かったという罪悪感が強い。say remorsefully、look remorsefully、apologize remorsefully のように、過ちを認める発言・表情・謝罪と結び付けて覚えると使いやすい。
Break it into remorse + -ful + -ly: acting in a way that is full of deep regret. It expresses stronger guilt about one's own actions than the more general “regretfully” and often appears with “say,” “look,” or “apologize.”
例文
He looked remorsefully at the damage he had caused.
彼は自分が引き起こした被害を後悔の表情で見つめた。

remorsefully の語源・成り立ち Etymology
名詞 remorse「良心の呵責、深い後悔」に、「〜に満ちた」を表す -ful を加えた remorseful に、副詞を作る -ly が付いた語です。remorse はラテン語 remordēre「再びかむ、絶えず苦しめる」に由来します。
It was formed by adding -ful to remorse and then the adverb ending -ly. Remorse comes from the Latin remordēre, meaning “to bite again” or “to torment continually.”
