representational は representation＋-al、さらに represent に分けられる。represent はラテン語 repraesentare に由来し、re-「再び」＋ praesentare「目の前に置く」で「それと分かる形で示す」が原義。そこから現実の対象を分かるよう描く「具象的な」の意味になる。関連語は present, representative。
