Representational describes art or images that show people, objects, or scenes in a recognizable way. It is used when something tries to represent real life instead of being fully abstract. The word is most common in discussions of painting, sculpture, and visual style.

representational は representation＋-al、さらに represent に分けられる。represent はラテン語 repraesentare に由来し、re-「再び」＋ praesentare「目の前に置く」で「それと分かる形で示す」が原義。そこから現実の対象を分かるよう描く「具象的な」の意味になる。関連語は present, representative。
Representational comes from representation plus the adjective ending -al, and representation comes from represent. Represent goes back to Latin repraesentare, from re- "again" and praesentare "to place before, show."
