represses の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 reprimere(re-「back」+ premere「押す」)が語源。「押し返す→抑え込む」の意。関連語: compress(圧縮する)、express(表現する=押し出す)。感情や衝動を内側に「押し戻す」イメージから「抑圧する」の意味が生まれた。
Repress comes through Latin repressus, the past participle of reprimere, formed from re-, meaning “back,” and premere, meaning “to press.” Its basic historical image is therefore that of pressing something back or holding it down. English developed both psychological uses, involving emotions or memories, and political or social uses, involving forceful restraint. Represses is the regular third-person singular present form, created by adding -es to repress.
