覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

resolved は resolve の過去形・過去分詞で、語末 e を残して -d を加え、/rɪˈzɑːlvd/ などと発音します。形容詞では the issue is resolved、resolved cases のように「問題のもつれが解かれ、処理済み」の状態を表します。人が「固く決意した」意味もありますが、ここでは問題の解決済みに限定して覚えましょう。

Resolved is the past tense and past participle of resolve. Because resolve already ends in e, add only -d; the ending is pronounced /d/ after the voiced sound /v/. For the adjective in this entry, picture a tangled problem that has been loosened and completely dealt with. Common patterns are the issue is resolved, the error has been resolved, and resolved cases. Resolve can also mean make a firm decision, giving resolved another sense connected with determination, but the examples here focus specifically on problems that no longer need action.

resolved の語源・成り立ち Etymology

resolved はラテン語 resolvere にさかのぼり、re-「ほどいて」+ solvere「ゆるめる・解く」から成ります。もともとは「もつれを解く」感覚で、問題を解きほぐして「解決済み」の意味になりました。関連語に solvedissolve があります。

Resolved is formed from resolve plus the past-tense and participial ending -d. Resolve entered English through Latin resolvere, composed of re-, suggesting reversal or release, and solvere, “to loosen, untie, or release.” The physical image of loosening something developed into the abstract idea of analyzing and settling a difficulty. As a participial adjective, resolved therefore describes something whose difficulty has been untangled and dealt with.
