root out は root「根」と out「外へ」から成る句動詞です。root は古ノルド語・ゲルマン系の「植物の根」、out は古英語の「外へ」に由来し、「根ごと外へ引き抜く」感覚から「根絶する」になりました。uproot も近い仲間です。
`Root out` is built from `root` and `out`, with `root` coming from Germanic sources related to the root of a plant, and `out` from Old English. The basic image is pulling something out by the roots.
