接ぎ木において台となる植物の根や幹の部分のこと。この台木の上に別の植物（穂木）を接ぎ木して新しい植物を作成する。
A rootstock is the root and lower stem of a plant that another plant is joined to in grafting. It is commonly used in farming and gardening to control how strong, healthy, or disease-resistant the final plant will be.

root と stock に分けると覚えやすい。root は「根」、stock は plant stock などで出る「株・土台・元になるもの」。つまり rootstock は「根付きの土台」で、接ぎ木で上に別の枝（scion）を載せる側だと整理すると定着しやすい。fruit tree の説明では scion と対で出やすいので、「rootstock＝下側、scion＝上側」とセットで覚えると混同しにくい。
