Sadist was formed from sadism plus the person-forming suffix -ist. Sadism ultimately derives from the name of the French writer the Marquis de Sade, whose works portrayed cruelty and sexual gratification. The psychiatric term sadism was established in the late nineteenth century, notably through the work of Richard von Krafft-Ebing. Sadist subsequently developed as the corresponding noun for a person who practices or displays such behavior.
