侯爵とは、ヨーロッパの貴族制度における称号の一つで、公爵に次ぐ地位に位置します。フランスやイギリスなどの国々で歴史的に重要な役割を果たした貴族階級の称号です。日本の旧華族制度にも同様の称号が存在していました。
A marquis is a nobleman of high rank in some European systems, especially below a duke and above an earl or count. The title was historically connected with ruling or protecting border areas. Today, it is mainly used in historical, literary, or formal discussions.

marquis は歴史小説や欧州史で出る「肩書きの英単語」として覚えると残りやすいです。まず序列をセットで整理し、duke（公爵）より一段下、count／earl より上の“中上位の貴族”と置くと位置づけが安定します。英語では marquess という綴りもあり、どちらも侯爵。名前の前で the Marquis of ... の形で現れやすいので、人名付きの称号として覚えるのも有効です。つづりの見た目より発音は「マーキー」系で、語尾の s をそのまま読まない点にも注意すると混同しにくくなります。

marquis は古フランス語 marquis に由来し、さらに中世ラテン語 marca「国境・辺境」にさかのぼります。もとは国境地帯を治める人で、関連語に march「辺境」や margrave があり、「辺境の領主」から侯爵になったと分かります。
Marquis came from Old French marquis and goes back to Medieval Latin marca, meaning a border or frontier. It first referred to a ruler or lord of a border region. Because border areas were politically important, the title later became a high rank of nobility. Related words include march in its old sense of "borderland" and margrave.
