scamp は「手を抜く・ぞんざいに片づける」という動詞 scamp から来た語で、語幹は古ノルド語 skammr「短い」に結びつけられます。scant と同じく「短く切り上げる」感覚が底にあり、そこから『悪党・いたずら者』へずれるのが見えてきます。
