解説 Definition
水痘・帯状疱疹ウイルスが再活性化して起こる皮膚疾患で、神経に沿って帯状に発疹が生じる。発疹は通常体の片側に限局し、強い痛みや灼熱感を伴い、かゆみやしびれも現れることがある。免疫力が低下したときに起こりやすく、早期に治療することで合併症を防げる。

shingles の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語の「割る」を意味する scindere に由来し、古英語で木を薄く割った板材を指す言葉となりました。本来は「木を割って作る屋根用の板」を意味し、その形状と製法から「屋根板」に定着しました。同じ語根を持つ rescind（撤回する）や scission（切断）も関連語です。
Shingles comes from a word ultimately related to Latin scindere, meaning "to split." The idea was a thin piece of wood made by splitting timber. Because such split pieces were commonly used on roofs, the word became the usual name for roof tiles or boards; rescind and scission come from the same older root.
