shingles は、体の片側などに強い痛みや発疹が出る病気「帯状疱疹」を意味します。病名として使う時は形は複数形に見えますが、単数扱いで用いられます。

shingle はラテン語 scindere「割る」に由来し、木を薄く割った屋根板を指す語になりました。shingles はその複数形ですが、屋根板のように小さな発疹が並ぶ見え方から、帯状疱疹という病名にも使われます。関連語に rescind（撤回する）や scission（切断）があります。
Shingles comes from a word ultimately related to Latin scindere, meaning "to split." The idea was a thin piece of wood made by splitting timber. Because such split pieces were commonly used on roofs, the word became the usual name for roof tiles or boards; rescind and scission come from the same older root.
