In this sense, lay is transitive, so it normally has an object: laid the books on the desk, laid a carpet, or laid a blanket on the floor. Do not confuse it with lie, meaning “be in a resting position.” That verb follows lie–lay–lain, so lay can also appear as the past tense of lie in a different grammatical pattern.
