shrapnel は19世紀初めの英語で、炸裂弾を考案した英国軍人 Henry Shrapnel の姓から生まれた人名語です。接頭辞や接尾辞でなく固有名そのものが核で、shrapnel shell という元の呼び名も同源。『発明者の名が、そのまま飛び散る破片の名になった』と分かると覚えやすいです。
"Shrapnel" comes from the surname of Henry Shrapnel, a British army officer in the early 19th century. His name was first used for a type of explosive shell, in the phrase "shrapnel shell." Later the word shifted from the weapon itself to the broken metal pieces that fly out when it explodes.
