signaling の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 signalis(しるしの)から古フランス語 signal を経て英語に。語根 signum は「印・しるし」を意味し、sign(署名)や signature(署名)と同根。「印をつけて伝える」が原義で、そこから「合図・信号」の意味が生まれた。
Signal entered English through French and ultimately comes from Medieval Latin signale, “a sign,” based on Latin signum, “mark or sign.” Sign and signature share this historical root. Signaling is formed in modern English by adding -ing to the verb signal, turning the action into a noun or participle. Its uses in traffic, machines, and biology all preserve the central idea of conveying information by means of a detectable sign.
