signification の語源・成り立ち Etymology
signification はラテン語 significatio に由来し、sign-「しるし」+ -fic-「作る」+ -ation「こと」と分けられます。印を作って何かを示すことが核なので、言葉が運ぶ意味や含意を表すのです。signify や significant も同根です。
Signification comes from Latin significatio. It is built from sign- meaning "mark" or "sign," and a root related to facere, "to make," so the original sense is something like "making a sign."
