ねえさん

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

sis は sister の親しみを込めた口語的な短縮形で、家族内の呼びかけやメッセージで使う。日本語では文脈により「お姉ちゃん」「妹」だが、この見出しでは「お姉さん」。Hi, sis! のような呼びかけが典型で、正式な紹介や公的な文章では sister を使う。複数形は sisters ではなく sisses となる。

Connect sis directly with sister: it is a short, affectionate family word, not a formal synonym with a different meaning. Picture a casual message beginning “Hi, sis!” or someone calling to an older sister at home. English sis does not itself tell you whether the sister is older or younger, even though Japanese translation must often choose お姉ちゃん or 妹 from context. Use sister in formal introductions and ordinary neutral descriptions; use sis mainly in conversation, personal messages, or affectionate address. Its plural is sisses, although the full form sisters is much more common.

sis の語源・成り立ち Etymology

sis は sister の口語短縮形。sister は古英語 sweostor、さらにゲルマン祖語 *swestr-、印欧祖語 *swesor にさかのぼる。sisterlysorority も同系で、「姉妹」を呼ぶ古い語幹が今もそのまま生きている。

Sis is a colloquial shortening of sister, created by reducing the longer family term to its first syllable. Sister comes from Old English sweostor and is related to forms in other Germanic languages, ultimately going back to Proto-Indo-European roots represented as swesor. The shortened form sis has long been used as an affectionate term of address. It is formed by abbreviation rather than by borrowing from a separate language.
