sit down は sit + down で、「腰を落として下へ」という動きがそのまま意味になった句です。sit は古英語 sittan、さらに seat や sedentary と同じ *sed- 系; down も古英語由来で、語源を知ると「座る」が姿勢変化の語だと見えてきます。
