A sniffer is something or someone that detects, examines, or searches for something by finding signs of it. In technology, it often means a program or device that monitors network data. sniffer は sniff に行為者を表す語尾 -er が付いた語で、「くんくん嗅ぐもの・人」がそのまま形になっています。sniff 自体は鼻をすする音をまねた擬音語系で、sniffle や snivel と近く、機械のスニッファーも「匂いを嗅ぎつける鼻」の比喩だと分かります。
"Sniffer" is made from "sniff" and the suffix "-er," meaning a person or thing that does an action. "Sniff" is probably imitative, based on the sound of breathing in through the nose.
