pity（哀れみ）を知っていれば、その「哀れみを引き起こす」状態が pitiable。まず pity → pitiful → pitiable と並べて覚えると定着しやすいです。pitiful も近いですが、pitiable はやや文語的で、相手をバカにするより「同情に値する」という響きが出やすい語。a pitiable condition / a pitiable figure のように、見ていて気の毒になる場面と一緒に覚えると残ります。pitiless（情け容赦ない）とは形が似ていて意味は逆方向なので要注意です。

pitiable は pity「哀れみ」+ -able「〜されうる」から成ります。pity は古フランス語 pite、さらにラテン語 pietas「情愛・敬虔さ」にさかのぼり、piety や pitiful も同族です。つまり『哀れみを向けずにいられないもの』が原義です。
Pitiable comes from pity plus the suffix -able, meaning "able to be" or "fit to be." Pity came through Old French from Latin pietas, which meant feelings of duty, tenderness, or compassion; piety and pitiful share the same root. The sense developed into "deserving pity" or "causing pity."
