解説 Definition
文字や模様の形に切り抜いた紙や薄い板を当て、その上から絵の具やインクをのせて同じ図柄を写すための型紙を指す。装飾や表示、壁画制作などで、同じ形を繰り返し再現したいときに使われる。
A stencil is a thin sheet or pattern with cut-out shapes used to copy letters, designs, or images onto another surface. It is common in art, crafts, signs, and decorating. You place it on a surface and apply paint, ink, or another material through the openings.

stencil は中世フランス語 estenceler「きらめくように飾る」にさかのぼり、ラテン語 scintilla「火花」へ連なる語。語幹 scintill- は「火花」で、scintilla や scintillate と同根だと知ると、模様を火花のように散らす道具の感覚が見えてくる。
Stencil came through French and is thought to go back to forms related to decorating or marking with small patterns. It is often connected with Latin scintilla, meaning "spark," the source of English scintillate. The idea seems to have shifted from sparkling or dotted decoration to the tool used to create repeated designs.
